On the 22nd May, PhD student Eileen Courtney travelled to the Royal Institution in London to take part in IOP's Three Minute Wonder Competition.
Eileen qualified for the competition when she won the IOP Rosse Medal at the IOP Spring Meet, which happened in Limerick on 12th May.

Eileen had 3 minutes to explain her research, using 1 PowerPoint slide, and as many props as she wanted, to a general audience. 12 physics students and early career researchers from around Britain and Ireland took part in the competition, taking turns to give their talks behind Faraday's desk in the Royal Institution's amphitheatre.

The participants were judged both by an audience vote and the votes of a team of judges. Prof. Mark Miodownik, a prolific scientific author and broadcaster headed up the judges panel. He was joined by Dr Lindsay Keith (University of Greenwich), Dr Chris North (Cardiff University, former Sky at Night presenter), Wendy Sadler (Cardiff University, STEM communicator and founder of Science Made Simple), and Fran Scott (science communicator/presenter).

Eileen was awarded the Audience favourite award and the overall Runner-Up award for the evening.
